Part 1. Hazardous waste minimization and disposal

Does the institution have strategies in place to safely dispose of all hazardous, special (e.g. coal ash), universal, and non-regulated chemical waste and seek to minimize the presence of these materials on campus?:
Yes

A brief description of steps taken to reduce hazardous, special (e.g. coal ash), universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:

Where possible, UIW has continued initiatives to reduce the quantity and/or toxicity of hazardous waste generate by the University through substitution, limiting purchasing volumes and educating producers of such wastes.

A brief description of how the institution safely disposes of hazardous, universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:

UIW operates a hazardous waste laboratory as the central accumulation area and receives waste from all programs across the University.  Wastes are categorized and stored appropriately until removal and disposal via a licensed hazardous waste vendor.

A brief description of any significant hazardous material release incidents during the previous three years, including volume, impact and response/remediation:

N/A (none)

A brief description of any inventory system employed by the institution to facilitate the reuse or redistribution of laboratory chemicals:

UIW has a chemical library where excess virgin chemicals may be donated or exchanged for use by other researchers,  although our size limits participation due to low volumes of excess virgin chemicals available.

Part 2. Electronic waste diversion

Does the institution have or participate in a program to responsibly recycle, reuse, and/or refurbish electronic waste generated by the institution?:
Yes

Does the institution have or participate in a program to responsibly recycle, reuse, and/or refurbish electronic waste generated by students?:
Yes

If yes to either of the above, provide:

A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program(s), including information about how electronic waste generated by the institution and/or students is recycled:

1. Electronic waste generated by the University is gathered by UIW IT team as members of the organization make us aware of the need to collect it from them. The items are taken to a central location (IT warehouse) and evaluated for:

  • Potential for donation to institutions outside of the University
  • Condition and age

2. Based on the evaluation, the items are repurposed or aggregated for pickup by our e-waste partner.
