A brief description of the institution’s formal community partnership to advance sustainability:

A formal Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the Ettling Center for Civic Leadership and Sustainability and Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of San Antonio. This MOU concerns specifically the terms under which student volunteers from the University of the Incarnate Word can participate in volunteer opportunities coordinated by Catholic Charities or undertaken as collaborations between the two entities. Work undertaken by UIW students in partnership with Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of San Antonio is focused on empowering individuals and families with the goal of fostering independence. Catholic Charities provides over 25 bilingual and culturally sensitive programs in 19 counties throughout the Archdiocese of San Antonio without regard to gender, race, creed, religion, disability, national origin, or socioeconomic status, supporting many of the UN's ustainable development goals.

A brief description of the institution’s formal community partnership to advance sustainability (2nd partnership):

The Ettling Center for Civic Leadership and Sustainability and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul have a formal memorandum of understanding covering particularly the relationship between the Cardinals' Cupboard at the University of the Incarnate Word and the Society. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul's primary focus is on collaboration with other people of good will in order to provide services to individuals, without regard to race, creed, gender, marital status, national origin, age, or physical disability.

The University of the Incarnate Word and the Headwaters at Incarnate Word are both ministries of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word and have a long-standing and multi-dimensional relationship that involves community service and education. Headwaters at Incarnate Word works to restore meaningful connection between humans and the natural world primarily by working the land, bringing health and healing to an ecologically disturbed but still beautiful urban landscape. They also aim to cultivate an ecological ethic in others by learning and embracing environmentally responsible behavior and actions.

Among the many relationships between the University of the Incarnate Word and community partners, the following are both vibrant and related directly to sustainability:

San Antonio Food Bank, with representatives serving on UIW's Cardinals' Cupboard committee and frequent opportunities for community service for members of UIW's campus community

Ella Austin Community Center, with regular opportunities for community service for members of UIW's campus community in the pursuit of self-sufficient, diverse communities that are characterized by being physically, socially and economically healthy places in which individuals and families can live and develop to their maximum potential.
