The University of the Incarnate Word offers differs orientation tracks for staff, full-time faculty, and part-time faculty. Sustainability components are present in training for all three categories, but those components differ from category to category.
Full-Time Faculty: The university runs a first-year faculty orientation and mentoring program, which includes a section on sustainability. Co-coordinator of the orientation/mentoring program, Sr. Martha Ann Kirk, reports that first-year faculty participate in the following sustainability-related activiites: 1) Visiting Incarnate Word Heritage Center to see how sustainability is a vital part of the work of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word; 2) introduction of the Headwaters at Incarnate Word, the 53-acre nature sanctuary adjoining the university campus, encouragement to consider how the Headwaters can be used as an educational resource; 3) introduction of Solar House and Community Garden at UIW, encouragement to consider how the Headwaters can be used as an educational resource.
Part-Time Faculty: All part-time faculty must complete mandatory Title IX training, supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals of Good Health and Well Being and Gender Equality by working toward an equitable work environment free from discrimination and harassment,
Staff: Staff participate in formal sessions of new employee training, which includes all elements listed here: https://my.uiw.edu/hr/hiring-information/new-employees.html Units on a equitable and safe work environment and on promoting employee health support UN Sustainable Development Goals such as Good Health and Well Being, Gender Equality, and information about the history of our university, the legacy of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, and the Headwaters Sanctuary which surrounds part of our campus and adjoins it, support Sustainable Cities and Communities.
