Student sustainability research incentives

Does the institution have an ongoing program to encourage students in multiple disciplines or academic programs to conduct sustainability research?:
Yes

A brief description of the student sustainability research program:
The Ettling Center for Civic Leadership and Sustainability offers two programs, one general and one more focused, that support sustainability research.
1) Cardinal Community Leaders, a mentorship experience that gives undergraduate students opportunities "to deepen and broaden their leadership capacity through service." These service activities routinely reflect an engagement with one or more of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
2) Legacy Sustainability Scholarships, $500/semester, to assist with sustainability-related service projects and to conduct "sustainability projects," which may include service learning or formal research.

Faculty sustainability research incentives

Does the institution have a program to encourage academic staff from multiple disciplines or academic programs to conduct sustainability research?:
Yes

A brief description of the faculty sustainability research program:
The 1881 Commemorative Award for Faculty Development provides up to $3000 to support faculty projects that have a profound connection to UIW's mission, which includes as its core tenets "the search for and communication of truth, thoughtful innovation, care of the environment, community service, and social justice." Broadly speaking, the university's mission connects to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, and historically, multiple recipients of The 1881 Award have engaged in projects with an overt sustainability focus: https://www.uiw.edu/orgs/research/funding/award-history.html

Recognition of interdisciplinary, transdisciplnary and multi-disciplinary research

Has the institution published written policies and procedures that give positive recognition to interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and multidisciplinary research during faculty promotion and/or tenure decisions?:
Yes

A copy of the promotion or tenure guidelines or policies:
The promotion or tenure guidelines or policies:
UIW Faculty Handbook, p. 91
Guidelines and Principles for Determining Minimal Scholarship Expectations for Promotion and Tenure
(Approved by the Provost, 3/25/09)
Consistent Scholarship Progress
The general expectation of all full-time faculty is that they engage every year in scholarship activities aimed at contributing to one’s discipline, profession, clinical practice, or interdisciplinary area of interest, and which build toward promotion and tenure. In consultation with colleagues and the dean, faculty are urged to map out a program of research that requires developing a specific area of expertise and sharing that expertise in the broader professional community.

Peer Review Definition
Peer review (= refereed) is a process by which scholarly work is made public and impartially evaluated by experts in the field as contributing to the field and can be built on by others to advance the field. “Field” covers disciplinary and interdisciplinary areas of interest as well as more direct forms of engagement in addressing pressing social issues.

See also Boyer Model of Scholarship, p. 88.

Library support

Does the institution have ongoing library support for sustainability research and learning?:
Yes

A brief description of the institution’s library support for sustainability research:
Librarian liaisons in all areas work with faculty in support of sustainability curricula and research through collection development and access, through co-curricular instruction, through the creation of online research tools. For example, the library maintains a Sustainability Studies LibGuide: https://libguides.uiwtx.edu/c.php?g=1150661&p=8489463
