A brief description of the institution’s sustainability partnerships with the local community:
In the fall of 2011, UDC formed a partnership with the Anacostia Watershed Society to launch the National Capital Region-Watershed Stewards Academy (NCR-WSA) at the University of the District of Columbia.
The Fall 2011 cohort of the Academy convened in September for 15 weekly class sessions that met at UDC. The course includes a field-based capstone project to improve regional storm water management, requiring a set number of hours of direct service for graduation.
NCR-WSA seeks to empower community activists and leaders help their neighbors change how they handle stormwater. Participants become Master Watershed Stewards by completing the course and implementing a capstone project that will begin to reduce pollution and runoff at its source, neighborhood by neighborhood.
