A committee comprised of members of the University Sustainability Task Force approved the definition of sustainability research provided in the STARS Technical Manual, as written below.
Sustainability research focuses on a key principle of sustainability (such as social equity or environmental stewardship); addresses a sustainability challenge (such as climate change or poverty); or furthers our understanding of the interconnectedness of societal and environmental challenges. Sustainability research leads toward solutions that support economic prosperity, social well-being, and ecological health.

UDC Sustainability Initiative staff conducted an inventory of the university's sustainability research efforts by contacting each school and college at the university and providing the institution's definition of sustainability research. Research activities meeting the criteria outlined in the definition are included below. Additional information on the research centers and infrastructure at UDC can be found at www.udc.edu/osp/facilities.htm.
