Through this initiative, UTSA seeks to amplify the economic and cultural strengths of the Westside by marshalling UTSA talent and resources to engage in strategic community partnerships. UTSA will develop a coordinated approach in alignment with the university’s commitment to delivering a world-class education to communities in San Antonio’s urban core.

1) GREENSOURCES
Texas GreenSources is a FREE classroom resourcing project developed by the University of Texas at San Antonio and the Texas Sustainable Energy Research Institute. It provides teachers access to lesson plans, curriculum units and other teaching resources that integrate our community’s unique environmental, social and economic aspects through learning that is local, relevant, and engaging. This learning is referred to as Education for Sustainable Development or ESD.
Each resource has been reviewed by an experienced educator and matched to relevant curriculum outcomes for the state of Texas, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, the College and Career Readiness Standards and the North American Association Guidelines for Excellence in Environmental Education.

The Office of Sustainable is a full service sustainability resource available to faculty, staff and students and is a direct liaison to university leadership on sustainability policy and resource allocation.
The Office of Sustainability has several ongoing/ recent outreach programs and initiatives including:
1) Basura Bash
UTSA hosts one of San Antonio’s annual “Basura Bash(es)”. Volunteers cleans waterways and participates in sponsoring Maverick creek on UTSA campus.

2) Seated Infants and Toddlers (SIT!)
UTSA received an award amount of $70,000 from the Texas Department of Transportation and hosted community outreach events including car seats checks and installation, purchased approximately 250 car seats for distribution and to hire a grant specific project manager. The car seats were distributed to eligible families in San Antonio. The grant concluded in August of 2023. The grant is a proponent of social sustainability.

A brief description of the institution’s other community partnerships to advance sustainability:
The Office of Community Outreach works with educational, business and civic leaders in communities served by UTSA to promote higher education as an economic development resource. The OCO in concert with community leaders addresses barriers that inhibit or prevent area residents from enrolling at UTSA specifically and higher education in general.
1) Mobile Go Center (MGC)
The UTSA MGC supports the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s campaign’s efforts to achieve the student participation and success goals of the 60x30TX initiative by 2030.
The 42-foot mobile computer lab serves middle and high school students and is dedicated to increasing the number of students enrolled and succeeding in higher education programs, especially those traditionally underrepresented in the state of Texas. This intiative supports social sustainability.
