The Division of Diversity and Community Engagement launched in 2007 and is one of the most comprehensive units of its kind in higher education. It is lead by the Vice President for Diversity and Community Engagement is tasked with implementing policies, best practices, and trainings related to diversity, equity, inclusion and human rights. In addition, every college, school and unit across campus maintains a diversity committee. With more than 40 programs and initiatives, the DDCE includes Office for Inclusion and Equity, Academic Diversity Initiatives, Diversity Education Initiatives, the Multicultural Engagement Center, Services for Students with Disabilities, the Gender and Sexuality Center, the UT Charter School System, Pre-College Academic Readiness Programs, UT Outreach, the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health, the UT Austin Community Engagement Center, and the University Interscholastic League. Our work spans the university and community, reaching faculty, staff, students, alumni and prospective students.

A brief description of the institution’s cultural competence trainings and activities for each of the groups identified above:

Human Resources offers some diversity-related trainings via online modules when employees first join the University's staff. The modules are updated periodically and staff must retake the modules every 2 years. The Division of Diversity and Community Engagement (DDCE) provides toolkits and trainings for recruiting and retaining faculty and inclusive classroom trainings as well as disABILITY Advocate trainings that help faculty and staff better understand students and employees with disabilities and learn the best ways to advocate for those students and employees. The DisABILITY Advocate training is offered annually and by departmental request. DDCE additionall offers a two-part LGBTQ Ally training twice a year and upon request. Housing and Food Services offers diversity programming through its residence halls and Student Affairs includes diversity training in all freshman orientations. Students must take courses in the areas of Cultural Diversity and Global Ethics in order to graduate. Additionally, the Campus Climate Response Team offers some educational programming by request as does the Diversity Education Intiatives within the DDCE.
