A brief description of the institution’s stormwater modeling program and/or practices, including the methodologies and tools used:

In an ongoing NSF-funded research project at UT, Jon Hathaway's team is developing a sustainable urban water management plan for UT and Knoxville. This project supports the development of US–Australian collaborative research in sustainable urban water management. This project paves the way for future US–Australian collaboration by using data collected by UT in models developed in Australia and vice versa, enhancing stormwater modeling capabilities at UT (and thus the United States). The work will also enable the researchers to collaborate on improving these models, specifically targeting unit processes related to urban pollutants in stormwater systems. Our ultimate goal of achieving calibrated modeling based on unit processes could transform the field of stormwater management by (1) allowing more accurate measures of pollutant removal efficiency in stormwater controls and (2) achieving more effective and cost-efficient watershed restoration by evaluating intended outcomes through modeling before implementing treatment strategies (i.e. “try before you buy”). This project allows both US and Australian researchers to conduct more specific and effective research in the areas of fate and transport of contaminants in water, the availability of high-quality water supplies, and the environmental engineering implications of energy and resource consumption. Outside of this program, UT does not have a true modeling program. We manage reactively/retroactively the stormwater generated from our new construction. Tools used: stormwater treatment wetland, water quality units, dry detention basins, cisterns, infiltration areas, silva cells, buffer zones, green roofs, bio-retention areas.
