Switch Your Thinking: Launched in fall 2008, this campaign is focused on promoting resource conservation among UT Knoxville faculty, staff and students.
POWER Challenge: This annual competition challenges residence halls to see who can reduce resource consumption the most, while increasing recycling and hosting environmental education programs.
RecycleMania UT Knoxville has participated with this annual intercollegiate recycling and waste-reduction competition since 2006. As part of the competition, UT Recycling hosts a number of environmental awareness programs, including a recycling-themed sporting event called Recyclympics.
A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign(s):
Switch Your Thinking has been one of the most successful environmental campaigns at UT Knoxville, helping the campus avoid over $1 million in electricity costs.
The POWER Challenge promotes a conservation ethic in campus residence halls. The competition also saves resources, including an estimated $40,000 in utilities during 2009.
As a result of RecycleMania, the university's cumulative recycling total increased by 7,476 pounds (0.4 percent) in 2010 compared to 2009.
