Sustainability Integration Program for Students (SIPS)
A brief description of the institution’s featured program, initiative, or accomplishment:
The Sustainability Integration Program for Students (SIPS) is an award winning program linking operational sustainability outcomes with student education and experience. Since its establishment in 2011, SIPS provides authentic learning experiences for students from across the institution through the collaborative design of focused learning programs that address on-campus operational priorities. Through participation in undergraduate and postgraduate classroom activities and research projects, students from across the institution have delivered measurable improvements to campus operations and infrastructure. The program is designed to provide engaging and stimulating experiences for students by inviting and guiding their input into finding solutions to real-life challenges faced by the University community. Through participation in SIPS, students from across the University of Tasmania are given opportunities to further develop and use their disciplinary skills in ways that highlight the positive impacts their learning can have on their community and their University.

Carbon Neutral certification by (Australian) Climate Active Carbon Neutral Standard
A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:
The University of Tasmania is committed to minimising the emission of greenhouse gas emissions and was certified as a carbon neutral organisation in 2017 (for its 2016 greenhouse gas inventory) by the Commonwealth National Carbon Offset Standard (NCOS), now Climate Active Carbon Neutral Standard. UTAS was the second university to be carbon neutral certified in Australia.
Carbon neutral certification against the Standard provides a credible stamp showing that an organisation has met all the requirements of the Standard. To achieve carbon neutral certification, entities must:
- Measure and reduce emissions where possible: Read more in our Greenhouse gas emissions management at UTAS and Our progress sections below to find out more about UTAS greenhouse gas emissions and emissions reduction initiatives
- Offset remaining emissions: Offset projects selected deliver benefits to the Tasmania community and to regions from which our international students originate, and provide co-benefits aligning with the University’s values
- Publicly report on their carbon neutrality: You can find the University’s Public Disclosure documents in the Department of Environment and Energy certified organisations webpage.

A brief description of the third program/initiative/accomplishment:
"Education for Sustainability Tasmania (EfS Tas) is a United Nations recognised Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development. A UN Regional Centre of Expertise (UNRCE) is not a physical centre or building, but rather an apolitical network of individuals, organisations and experts who understand the sustainability challenges in their home regions and are committed to using education as a tool for building a sustainable future.
Tasmania is making a significant contribution to the global learning space in sustainability education thanks to a growing community striving to build more sustainable patterns of living and supporting resilient, connected and educated people. Our members all support others to develop the skills and capacity needed to protect our planet and ensure social and cultural prosperity for all.
Education for Sustainability Tasmania:
- Facilitates collaboration and bring people together to work on sustainability education initiatives.
- Builds the capacity of organisations to improve delivery of sustainability education initiatives.
- Promotes and endorses sustainability education for projects delivered by members, as well as recognising the significant contribution Tasmania is making to the global learning space for sustainability education.
