Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Under-Told Stories Learning Modules and First-Year Experience
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Under-Told Stories is a journalism project focused on diverse aspects of sustainability and the work of change agents addressing them. It has been housed at the University of St. Thomas for several years. Under-Told Stories has sought to expand the educational impact of its stories which are broadcast nationally on the highly respected PBS NewsHour. Most of these global stories relate directly to social, environmental, and economic sustainability. The Under-Told Stories project offers nine full Learning Modules – lesson plans and teaching notes to accompany stories – for higher education instructors. The Learning Modules were designed and written by faculty within and beyond St. Thomas and reviewed by an editorial board for quality, and they are freely available to all educators. Under-Told Stories has also developed a First-Year Experience available in St. Thomas themed Living Learning Communities. In 2022, a third of the incoming first-year class engaged with Under-Told Stories content through videos and written reflections.
