A brief description of the LCCA policy and/or practices:
The University does a simple payback for HVAC, plumbing, and electrical equipment on new and remodel projects. This is the amount of time required in operation before the project has paid for itself via energy savings, typically determined in years. Sometimes we have no choice due to failure of equipment, but typically we look at life of the equipment, efficiency of the existing, then we look at new equipment and the simple payback assessment. Finally, we do also look at what our maintenance and repair costs have been on pieces of equipment to determine priority for replacement. We do try to purchase new equipment that is less maintenance intense and/or what the preventative maintenance requirements would be for that new equipment compared to the existing equipment.

To count, the criteria must address the specific sustainability challenges and impacts associated with products and/or services in each category, e.g. by requiring or giving preference to multi-criteria sustainability standards, certifications and labels appropriate to the category.
