A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about employee commuting, including the timeframe for when the analysis was conducted and how a representative sample was reached, if applicable:

The Office of Sustainability sponsored a project in a senior Geography class in the Fall of 2020 to deploy UofSC's first campus commuter survey. Sample size was very small (370 response or approximately 0.1% of campus population), but the survey established some baseline data from which we can begin to estimate these fields.
Previously a survey was created and deployed as part of a Parking Study for a Journalism class. This consisted of student focus groups and 12 in-depth faculty/staff interviews regarding parking at the university, as well as a survey that received over 5000 responses from those with a university email address. The survey was conducted to measure satisfaction with the university's parking system and could give an estimate of students commuting by car.

These percentages are based on a small sample size from the University's first ever attempt to quantify campus commuting habits. Future surveys will work to expand the sample size and improve the accuracy and precision of these numbers. The percentage for telecommuting may be impacted by COVID-19 response on campus.
