A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities:

The Green Certification Program is a voluntary, self-guided initiative that promotes sustainable practices at the University of South Carolina, engaging staff, faculty, and students in making our campus and our world a little greener. The program is designed, implemented and maintained by a team of student interns with Sustainable Carolina.

A brief description of how the employee educators are selected:

Employee educators volunteer on behalf of their individual office to serve as their offices coordinator. Each person interested in becoming coordinator is required to receive approval from their Director to ensure that they are aware of the sustainable changes that will be coming to their office. Both the coordinator and director sign a pledge detailing the commitment that will be required of them prior to attending the official training.

A brief description of the formal training that the employee educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach:

Employee educators attend a training session in which all details pertaining to the Certification process are reviewed. This is the first step in receiving certification for offices, and following the training employees work with one of the GOC interns to complete the rest of the certification process. Employees are given a copy of the GOC handbook and checklist, which serves as the primary resource for completion of the process.

A brief description of the financial and/or administrative support the institution provides to the program (e.g. annual budget and/or paid faculty/staff coordination):

The Office of Sustainability is responsible for the financial support of this program, which includes purchasing plaques for certified offices. Administration is run by a team of interns in the Sustainable Carolina Leadership Program, who are supported by a graduate assistant as well as the Assistant Director for Student Engagement. In 2019, a collaboration with the university's human resources department was put into place, in which our trainings are marketed by their office and count towards the required HR trainings for employees.
