A brief description of the sustainable operations and maintenance policy/program and/or O+M rating system(s) used:
The University of Sharjah has established and adopted a clear strategy and procedure for purchasing any materials, products, or equipment and follow methods and system that minimize detrimental impacts on the environment, occupant health and society. The cleaning conditions and procedure that were outlined in this context emphasized the availability of clean, comfortable, and healthy indoor air quality for the occupants by providing proper conditioning, eliminating and minimizing the pollutants (such as airborne contaminants, biological contaminants, soot, sand, etc.. Moreover, sufficient fresh air is provided by proper ventilation to dilute the gaseous pollutants in the air and improve air quality, composition, and freshness.
The university also put restrict instructions to reduce and minimize the amounts of materials used in different activities, such as cleaning agents, cleaning chemicals, disposable janitorial paper, liquid hand soap and sanitizers, and trash bins. The waste generated by the different activities is also minimized, diverting a significant part in recycling. Other events and procedures implemented on university campuses are:
ü Composting food waste on the university campus; this project attracted society and is expanding dramatically.
ü Low and economized flow washroom fixtures were equipped on the different buildings of the university.
ü The old light fixtures have been replaced with higher efficiency fluorescent/LED fixtures.
