A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities:

Champions sign-up to lead sustainability initiatives in their workplace. Each champion completes a Work Green certification checklist. On a monthly basis, champions receive a newsletter including information and links to resources or ideas for engaging colleagues. Quarterly meetings allow champions to share successes and challenges. Annual awards recognize achievements. Champions lead initiatives in their workplace such as promoting energy conservation month or leading waste-free coffee challenges.

Managers share program information with their team and ask employees to self-nominate based on personal interest.


A brief description of the formal training that the employee educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach:

Through Work Green participants have the opportunity to attend workshops. Recent topics have included community based social marketing, energy awareness training and waste prevention options on campus. All new members attend an orientation where they are provided information on sustainability related services and programs on campus.


A brief description of the financial and/or administrative support the institution provides to the program (e.g. annual budget and/or paid faculty/staff coordination):

Grants of up to $300 are available to help Work Green units to invest in the adoption of greener practices. Currently one staff member oversees the Work Green program, including coordination, communication, and grant administration.
