Has the institution engaged in a structured assessment process during the previous three years to improve diversity, equity and inclusion on campus?:
Yes
A brief description of the assessment process and the framework, scorecard(s) and/or tool(s) used:
USD uses items from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) the Culturally Engaged Campus Environments (CECE) to assess campus climate. These surveys have been administered to undergraduates on a three-year cycle since 2018. In Fall 2021, USD adminsitered items from the CECE survey to graduate students, faculty, and employees, this effort will join the next administration in our three-year cycle (Spring 2024). The items we use to assess campus climate focus on Belonging, Supportive Environment, Institutional Commitment to Diversity, Discrimination, and Institutional Response.
In addition to assessing climate, faculty assessed the courses that fulfill the two-course core curriculum requirement for Diversity, Inclusion, and Social Justice. The framework for the assessment was the learning outcomes and related rubric for courses that satisfy the Diversity, Inclusion and Social Justice core curriculum requirement.

A brief description of the most recent assessment findings and how the results are used in shaping policy, programs, and initiatives:
In Spring 2021, all undergraduate students answered questions related to campus climate on the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE, for first-year and senior students) or the Culturally Engaging Campus Environments Survey (CECE, for sophomore and junior students). Another in-house survey for graduate students and employees was launched in Fall 2021. Data from all these surveys can be found on the Institutional Research and Planning website. A key finding in the surveys highlighted differences in people feeling safe, respected, and valued at USD among people of color and white people. As a goal, USD seeks to decrease these differences between the 2021 and 2024 survey administrations.
Key findings for students:
Belonging - Black students indicate an increased sense of belonging between 2018 and 2021.
Supportive Environment - First year students reported an increase in supportive environments for various forms of diversity with sexual orientation and economic background showing the largest increase.
Institutional Commitment to Diversity - Students of color agree less than their white peers that diversity is a major priority at this institution. However, first year student agreement that USD demonstrates a commitment to diversity increased between 2018 and 2021.
Discrimination - Students of color report experiencing discrimination or prejudice at higher rates than white students.
Institutional Response - Students' agreement regarding USD taking allegations of discrimination or harrassment seriously, providing information about related policies, and helping student develop the skills to confront discrimination and harrassment increased between 2018 and 2021.
The climate surveys led to the creation of an Equity Audit across all campus units.
