Does the institution have an ongoing program that offers incentives for academic staff in multiple disciplines or departments to develop new sustainability courses and/or incorporate sustainability into existing courses? :
A brief description of the incentive program(s):
At the end of USD's academic experience, students and faculty connect ideas across disciplines, synthesize disparate areas of knowledge, and pose the "big questions." Core Curriculum components connect and build on one another and integrative learning is an approach that creates an opportunity for students to make connections among ideas and experiences to synthesize knowledge. In the past 3 years, there have been several examples of Advanced Integration with sustainability as a central theme including collaborations between Environmental & Ocean Sciences & Communication, Environmental & Ocean Sciences & Fine Arts, and Sociology & Environmental Ethics. In support of "Campus as a Living Lab" there have also been several cooperative projects between Engineering and the Office of Sustainability, between Sustainable Supply Chain & Procurement, and between Environmental Management and the Changemaker Hub.
A brief description of the incentives that academic staff who participate in the program(s) receive:
In both the Honors program (across academic units) and within the College of Arts & Sciences (Advanced Integration), there are stipends and/or reassigned time (course off) incentives to develop & teach team-taught (full semester joint teaching) or linked (shared lectures and integrated project & presentations). Especially for Advanced Integration, a required upper division Core curriculum requirement, there have been several sustainability-related and sustainability-focused courses.
