A brief description of how the literacy assessment was developed and/or when it was adopted:
USD's survey was distributed to student participants of the annual Student Sustainability Summit, held on February 13, 2024. The survey was developed to address the learning outcomes identified for the event.
The survey was designed to meet the STARS version 2.2 requirements for the AC-6 and EN-6 requirements. The sustainability literacy questions comprised two of five (40%) of the assessment questions and were written to evaluate students' general understanding of sustainability, an understanding of specific sustainability issues in the greater San Diego area, and an understanding of the social impacts of sustainability (e.g., environmental racism and health outcomes). The sustainability culture questions comprised three of the five (60%) of the assessment questions and were intended to assess students' knowledge of sustainability initiatives on campus and their general attitude toward participating in sustainability planning on USD's campus. The survey also ask that students indicate their majors, as we were interested to see how sustainability literacy and culture varied among students of different programs.

Upon arrival at the event, students were provided a link to a Google form titled "Pre-Summit Survey," which they were asked to submit prior to the commencement of event activities. A portion of the event included a presentation on what sustainability is, why it matters, and what USD is currently doing or planning to do to address sustainability on campus. At the close of the event, students were provided a link to a separate Google form titled "Post-Summit Survey," which included questions that were identical to those of the pre-survey.

The Pre-Summit Survey had a response rate of 53.4% (78 responses of 146 student attendees). The following is a break down of responses by percentage of accurate answer for the Pre-Summit Survey:
