AC-4: Graduate Program

At the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies, theory and practice are merged to give students conceptual insight and hands-on training such that passion for peace and justice transforms into visible change.

The Master of Arts in Peace and Justice program prepares students from diverse backgrounds for careers ranging from conflict resolution and mediation to human rights, social entrepreneurship to education, development to advocacy. MAPJ students have undergraduate degrees in such diverse fields as political science, international relations, human rights, psychology, the arts or business administration.

Graduates of this program become teachers, CEOs, senior policy advisers, magistrate judges, foreign service officers, directors of development and international trade specialists. They work at the United Nations, One Earth Future Foundation, U.S. Department of Commerce, Catholic Relief Services, Nature Conservancy, the World Bank and U.S. Agency for International Development, among other private, public and nonprofit companies and organizations. They stand out for their capacity to analyze the root causes of violence, oppression and injustice, together with the appropriate peace-building strategies to address them.

The Masters in Global Leadership degree program is designed for working professionals. It offers students the opportunity to get practical, hands-on experience to help advance their careers and make real impacts in the world.

From studying cross-cultural leadership in Madrid to learning best business practices from local executives, students gain the skills and confidence necessary to become the global leaders. Lively discussions in intimate classes and professors wholly focused on student success help provide support on every step of the journey.

With an optimal blend of classroom and online instruction—and several short-term study abroad opportunities—students develop an extraordinary understanding of cultural, political and economic differences worldwide. Graduates leave the global leadership program with stronger leadership skills as well as the perspective (and connections) needed to become true global innovators.

Social innovation is increasingly essential to employers across all sectors, including business, health and education. USD Social Innovation students learn how to combine leadership, peace-building and business skills into a holistic approach that works toward innovative solutions for good. Students learn to contextualize social issues from a variety of perspectives including cultural, political and socio-economic variables, and to use the knowledge to formulate an action plan to meet emerging challenges such as refugee and migration flows, environmental degradation and humanitarian crises.

With a MASI degree, students become proficient in sustainable business model design, leadership, communication, human-centered design and problem solving, increasing their potential to develop innovations that will help communities to address poverty and social injustices.

Identifying the need for change isn't hard; perhaps the biggest challenge is narrowing down an area of focus. From microcredit to charter schools, hospices to fair trade, restorative justice to clean energy, there are abundant opportunities fro students to apply what they learn.

Along with the rigorous foundation of the MBA curriculum, the Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Enterprise Concentration prepares students to strive to achieve success in the triple bottom line: economic, environmental and social. Courses analyze what business must do to be socially responsible in a global landscape. Students develop leadership skills to face complex managerial decisions to align economic wealth creation and social value. A focal point is on management and governance systems, as well as personal values, leading to responsible conduct by firms and their employees.
Courses such as the Sustainable Global Supply Chain complements both aspects of Supply Chain and that of CSR to enable students to obtain a holistic exposure to the program.

The Nonprofit Management courses offered through the School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES) have been beneficial in providing insight into the challenges and inner workings of nonprofit organizations, and have added valuable perspective to the MBA program courses. Students learn how to start and operate a nonprofit organization, and gain hands-on experience by working with a nonprofit of their choice. The courses also provide the opportunities to meet people currently working for nonprofit organizations in San Diego, and to learn about the wide variety of organizations serving the San Diego area.

The Peace and Global Education Certificate is aimed at teaching the attitudes and skills necessary for peacemaking, replacing conflict with agreements based on mutually beneficial outcomes, and peace building, developing institutions and relationships that support peace through a foundation of justice within a global context. This program is a collaboration between the School of Leadership and Education Sciences and the University of San Diego’s Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies.
