11.1 Student wellbeing and assistance programs

The University Counseling Center (UCC) provides a comprehensive initial assessment and an individualized treatment plan to full-time members of the University of Rochester community who pay the mandatory health fee. Based on the initial assessment, a treatment plan is developed by the clinician that addresses the client’s unique needs and concerns. This plan may include recommendations such as, but not limited to: group therapy, workshops, brief therapy, referrals to community provider for specialized treatment or longer term therapy services, case management services, psychiatry or other campus services.

University Health Service offers primary care services for people of all gender, identities, and sexual orientations. Comprehensive support is also provided for students’ pelvic health and contraceptive needs.

The Mindful University Project is a campus-wide initiative offered through the UHS Health Promotion Office with a mission to empower our campus community to build a culture of mindful presence and compassion to:
- improve mental well-being;
- boost academic flourishing;
- increase resiliency to stress; and
- reduce levels of anxiety and depression.

The University of Rochester Public Safety Advisory Committee is composed of undergraduate, graduate, faculty, and staff leaders from the River Campus, Eastman School of Music (ESM), and University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) as well as members of the university’s senior leadership. The committee provides input and advice to ensure the following key areas are closely aligned: the safety and security of all University campuses, an inclusive and welcoming environment for all, and an approach to safety and security that reflects best practices in public safety. Each year it will present an annual report to the President on the work conducted by the committee, findings and recommendations for improvement.

A new emergency financial aid fund is now available to lessen the economic burden by providing immediate-use scholarship support to undergraduate students with financial need.

The Food Pantry is dedicated to challenging the rising issue of student food insecurity on campus by supporting and serving all students and postdocs at the University of Rochester. Individuals can browse and choose non-perishable items during the Pantry’s operation hours in 105 Wilson Commons, or pre-order a bag for pick up.

Additionally, UR Medicine EAP provides confidential guidance and support for addressing a variety of personal and work-related challenges. Best of all, services are free of charge to employees of customer organizations and their household members (for a limited number of sessions). EAP’s providers have a master’s degree/license in either Mental Health Counseling, Social Work, or Marriage and Family Therapy. Some staff also are Certified Employee Assistance Professionals.

11.3 Smoke free environments
Does the institution restrict outdoor smoking?:
Does the institution prohibit smoking and tobacco use across the entire campus?:

Smoking and tobacco use, including cigarettes; cigarillos; cigars; pipes; hookahs; clove cigarettes; pipe tobacco; snuff; smokeless, oral, or spit tobacco; and the use of electronic cigarettes 1, are prohibited at all times on University property, including in all of its buildings, residence halls and their grounds, clinics, laboratories, classrooms, private offices, plazas, vestibules, loading docks, and University-owned or leased vehicles and at University-sponsored events in all locations, except in designated smoking huts. The locations of the smoking huts are indicated on accompanying campus maps. Signs will be posted at each building’s entrances and displayed in prominent, visible areas to inform all individuals entering or occupying University property that smoking is prohibited. Organizers of University events are responsible for communicating and enforcing this policy.
