The Office of Disability Resources works to ensure that people with all kinds of disabilities have equal access and equal opportunity to fully participate in the University experience. We envision a collegiate environment committed to accessible and inclusive practices, where disability is a valued component of campus diversity.
 
Disability Resources offers academic adjustments and assists students requiring residential accommodations. Once students have selected the University of Rochester and have enrolled, they can register with our office.
 
Current students are encouraged to meet with an access coordinator early in the semester to become acquainted and talk about classroom accommodations. However, requests to discuss accommodations or learn more about our services are welcome at any time.

The universiry encourages student involvment in the LGBTQ community and offers a number of ways studetns can receive support. Some of these programs include the LGBTQ Advocacy Committee, guidance on the name change process, special interest housing, and a Trans at Rochester Handbook. The David T. Kearns Center for Leadership and Diversity at the University of Rochester strives to expand the educational pipeline through the doctoral degree for low-income, first-generation college, and underrepresented minority students. The center focuses on the creation of replicable and scalable educational models that will increase the number of low-income and historically underrepresented individuals pursuing undergraduate, gradate, and professional education.

The center provides educational guidance, scholarships, and support services to students who:

  • Come from low-income families
  • Will be, or already are, the first person in their family to earn a college degree
  • Come from racial groups identified by the federal government as underrepresented in higher education: African American, Native American, or Hispanic

The Refugee Student Alliance is a community service organization dedicated to broadening the University's outreach to local refugee communities while contributing to the health and vitality of Rochester. Through the recruitment and training of volunteers and collaboration with other organizations, RSA provides aid to existing organizations involved with the local refugee community. The secondary mission of RSA is to promote concern and awareness in the University's student body about refugees through our volunteer programs, fundraising, and community service events on campus for the local refugee community.

University Resource Groups are open to all University of Rochester employees (staff and faculty) and retirees. The Resource Groups provide opportunities for employees to directly contribute to the University of Rochester’s efforts to effectively support and manage diversity and inclusion. These groups serve as a resource to provide mentoring and professional development opportunities as well as opening additional communication lines between individuals, the greater Rochester community, and University management.
 
These University Resource Groups are an example of how the University is continuing its focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion. Each University Resource Group is linked to an executive champion.

6.3 Institutional climate assessment

Has the institution conducted an institutional climate assessment within the previous three years?:

Description of the methodology used to assess institutional climate:

In 2015 and 2019, The University of Rochester participated in the first two administrations of the Campus Climate Survey as part of a consortium colleges and universities organized by the Association of American Universities (AAU). In 2021 and 2023, Rochester worked directly with Westat to administer a survey instrument nearly identical to that used in the 2019 AAU administration.The attached report summarizes the survey’s findings and also provides background about the survey’s design.
