Plan Vision: In the spirit of Meliora, “ever better,” the University of Rochester is leading the way to a more sustainable future, forging creative and effective solutions to combat the environmental challenges facing our local and global community. We foster a culture that integrates planetary health, social equity, and economic vitality to create thriving, healthy, diverse, and resilient communities for this and future generations. 

 

Under Umbrella Goal : Sustainability Office, Strategie 1.2, an implementation core team is being established to oversee the plan's progress and create an annual report of the the plan's progress.

Umbrella Goal 3: Community Partnerships: Create and expand ongoing partnerships across the greater Rochester community to meet shared sustainability goals by 2029.
 
METRIC OF SUCCESS: An increase in the number of robust network of relationships, memberships, and regularized participation in external community efforts with an emphasis on equity, inclusion, and climate justice.

The plan includes 6 Goals focussed on Sustainable Operations. The following qualify per credit specifications:

Sustainabile Opertions Goal 1: Transportation: Develop and support programs that minimize or eliminate fossil-fuel transportation by 2029.

METRICS OF SUCCESS: A higher proportion (or 100%) of the campus fleet switching to electric; modes of tracking and mitigating emissions from commuter and business travel; structures that facilitate clean and alternative-fuel transportation on campus.

Goal 2: Sustainable Procurement: Develop and implement environmentally preferable purchasing guides by 2029.

METRICS OF SUCCESS: A more consistent use of LCCA in relevant purchasing decisions and an increase in the proportion of expenditures on third-party verified sustainable or ethical products.

Goal 4: Waste Management: Increase the University-wide waste diversion rate by location by the following metrics:* (River Campus, Memorial Art Gallery, Eastman School of Music, and off-site owned properties shall reach or exceed 50% by 2029, Medical Center and off-site owned clinical facilities shall reach or exceed 30% by 2029)

Goal 5: Grounds Management: 

Minimize negative environmental impacts from land use and management by developing and deploying design criteria that foster habitat stewardship, promote accessibility, and increase campus biodiversity by 2029.

Goal 6: Water Use: Reduce potable water use per weighted campus user 30% from a FY 2019 baseline by 2029.
