Does the institution integrate sustainability information into the educational offerings or materials provided during new student orientation or the equivalent?:
Yes

Narrative outlining how sustainability information is integrated into new student orientation or the equivalent:

All incoming first-year and transfer students are given the opportunity to pick up a free reusable clamshell to-go container during Orientation Check-In. This was a partnered event with Dining Services to promote sustainable grab-and-go dining practices on campus. One event on the orientation schedule is a Zero-Waste Lunch. Students are invited to enjoy a lunch that was prepared with the planet in mind. From the prep room to the plate, everything is served to avoid sending any material to the landfill. Special measures are taken to make this possible including pre- and post-consumer compost collection, locally sourced ingredients, and alternative packaging. The Team Green student employees hold educational tables where students can learn about the reusable clamshell program, proper recycling methods, and other zero-waste initiatives at UR. Giveaways courtesy of Dining Services and Facilities and Services.

Another event is the Stop 'N' Shop garage sale. Organized by Grassroots, this event sells used dorm essentials donated by students from previous years. This not only prevents these items from being sent to a landfill, but also prevents the purchase of new goods, saving energy and resources. All proceeds from the sale are used by Grassroots to then host sustainability-oriented events throughout the academic year.

Has the institution coordinated one or more sustainability-focused outreach campaigns during the previous three years?:
Yes

Description of sustainability-focused outreach campaigns from the previous three years:
Campus Race to Zero Waste is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Over an 8-week period each spring, colleges across the United States and Canada report the amount of recycling and trash collected each week and are in turn ranked in various categories based on who recycles the most on a per capita basis, as well as which schools have the best recycling rate as a percentage of total waste and which schools generate the least amount of combined trash and recycling. With each week’s updated ranking, participating schools follow their performance against other colleges and use the results to rally their campus to reduce and recycle more.

The University of Rochester participates annually and coordinates promotional events. See https://www.rochester.edu/sustainability/events/campus-race-to-zero-waste/
