6.1 Percentage of academic departments engaged in sustainability research
Number of academic departments engaged in sustainability research:
Annotated list or inventory of the institution’s sustainability research by department:
Description of the process used to identify the institution’s sustainability research:
Faculty who teach SUS-related courses, those who have participated in on-campus academic sustainability events, and those who have independent sustainability-related research (but do not teach SUS courses) were included in the inventory. Only undergraduate faculty were counted.
The STARS committee reviewed websites of known sustainability researchers, beginning with faculty included in previous STARS submissions. For departments where there were not previously identified research projects, the committee emailed the Department Chair to request information about sustainability research, providing them with the STARS definition of what would be considered. Additionally, faculty research websites were searched for sustainability-related work; when needed, this was followed by direct contact with the researchers.
