A brief description of the diversity and equity committee, office and/or officer, including purview and activities:
Office of Faculty Development and Diversity
The Office for Faculty Development and Diversity (OFDD) envisions an inclusive University community that reflects and celebrates the richness of diversity and the opportunities it creates. To achieve this, OFDD works with a broad network to build career development programs and develop strategies to promote social justice and foster the hiring and promotion of a more diverse faculty.
The rationale of focusing on faculty is that a diverse faculty has the greatest potential and power to transform the campus climate by providing a rich variety of perspectives that will enable students to be global thinkers and actors, to respect diverse values, and to attain a competitive edge as distinguished leaders in their fields. The University draws on the talents of a diverse faculty to build, sustain and enhance institutional excellence and capability through leading-edge research, innovative approaches to teaching and learning, and scholarship that reflects a rich plurality of perspectives.
Also, our office includes the Susan B. Anthony Center which works to bring awareness to, and advocate for, social justice and equality. Center staff work in collaboration with the University community and partner with a wide range of local, national, and international organizations to fulfill their goal of translating research into policy. Their work is conducted in the spirit of Susan B. Anthony, who fought tirelessly throughout her life for the betterment of disenfranchised populations.Diversity & Inclusion Committee
Diversity and Inclusion Committee
The purpose of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee, founded in fall 2006, is to bring together members of the University Community who are engaged in diversity outreach initiatives.
The committee meets monthly to discuss ongoing and upcoming initiatives and events, and members of the committee continue to focus on enhancing the environment for diversity and inclusion across the University. The Spotlight on Diversity initiative, which began in the spring of 2010 is a monthly feature in @Rochester, Student Buzz and the Parents Buzz. Committee members are also actively involved in the Office of the Vice Provost’s efforts to produce the Diversity Celebration posters which provide resources and organizational support to annual diversity and inclusion programs of interest to students, faculty and staff. We now organize posters around Black History Month, Women's History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, LGBTQI Awareness Month, Asian Heritage Month and Native American History Month.
Each of the University’s schools and colleges have offices devoted to diversity initiatives at the school level.

The University has launched a new Diversity Learning Series for the entire University community. There are two required training modules for all faculty and staff: 1) implicit bias, which is now available through MyPath and 2) harassment and discrimination prevention, which will be available in a few weeks.
All new students to the University are required to take an online course around the topic of sexual misconduct prevention. The course, which uses videos, interactive modules, and scenarios helps participants learn key information regarding the University of Rochester’s policies and resources related to this topic and teaches practical skills to identify problematic behavior and safely intervene to ensure it does not continue.
