Has the institution engaged in a structured assessment process during the previous three years to improve diversity, equity and inclusion on campus?:
A brief description of the assessment process and the framework, scorecard(s) and/or tool(s) used:
During the academic year of 2020-21, the University enlisted the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) to administer three campus climate surveys: the Faculty Survey, the Diverse Learning Environments Survey for students, and the Staff Climate Survey. An internal working group completed their integrated summary of the surveys in 2022, which was released in 2023. HERI is a UCLA-based research institute, home to the nation’s largest and oldest empirical study of higher education, the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) longitudinal study of the college student experience.
Survey 1: The Diverse Learning Environments Survey (DLE) captures student perceptions regarding the institutional climate; campus practices as experienced with faculty, staff, and peers; and student learning outcomes. Diverse student populations are at the center of the survey, and the instrument is based on studies of diverse student bodies and the complexity of issues that range from student mobility to intergroup relations.
Survey 2: The HERI Faculty Survey provides institutions with a comprehensive, research-based snapshot of key aspects of the faculty experience. Since 1989 nearly 1,300 two-and four- year institutions have used results from this survey to connect faculty practices, values and priorities to institutional success and drive improvement efforts.
Survey 3: The Staff Climate Survey (SCS) is designed to assess the campus climate for diversity from the staff/administrator perspective. The staff perspective and experience is an essential component for a fuller understanding of the climate for diversity on any given campus. The SCS has questions that overlap with, and is designed to be administered alongside, the HERI Faculty Survey and the Diverse Learning Environments (DLE) survey. This will enable you to compare campus climate from the perspectives of students, faculty, and staff. It is designed to be administered to all staff employees.
Does the assessment process address campus climate by engaging stakeholders to assess the attitudes, perceptions and behaviors of employees and students, including the experiences of underrepresented groups?:
Does the assessment process address student outcomes related to diversity, equity and success?:
Does the assessment process address employee outcomes related to diversity and equity?:
A brief description of the most recent assessment findings and how the results are used in shaping policy, programs, and initiatives:
Alongside other institutional data sources, the triple-survey campus climate results directly informed institutional planning, including the University's current strategic plan. Climate survey results were shared with the campus community for feedback, and the identified priorities informed campus leadership’s development of the SP.
Are the results of the most recent structured diversity and equity assessment shared with the campus community?:
A brief description of how the assessment results are shared with the campus community:
The executive summary of the results was announced to and shared with the campus community. The summary is also posted on our website: equity.richmond.edu.
