Does the institution have a written policy explicitly prohibiting laboratory animals in its care from being subjected to severe and unrelieved pain and distress?:
The written policy explicitly prohibiting laboratory animals in the institution’s care from being subjected to severe and unrelieved pain and distress:
Effective July 1, 2023, UR is in compliance with the General Assembly’s Animal Research Legislation, additionally the University of Richmond will post USDA animal facility inspection and annual reports.
There is also an animal use and care committee https://iacuc.richmond.edu/. Anyone working on vertebrate organisms must submit a proposal, which undergoes review by the committee (a vet is part of the committee). Invertebrates, however, do not get the same consideration. In addition, the Bio department recently hired an animal care specialist.
