A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
In 2023 and 2024, the Office for Sustainability hosted an Orientation Fair as part of the New Spider Orientation program at the University. At the fair, students were provided with opportunities to learn more about sustainability on campus, how to get involved with student groups, and what is happening in the broader Richmond community. Tables were staffed by campus and community environmental organizations, departments, and partner groups like Dining Services, Outdoor Adventure Recreation, and Transportation Services. Each table was interactive, providing information and an activity. Community organizations included the Sierra Club, Clean Virginia, Shalom Farms, and Southside ReLeaf. Engagement opportunities included a waste sorting activity, Klean Kanteen water bottle giveaways, field games, and informational sessions to help students find ways to get involved. All of the first-year and transfer students were provided opportunities to connect with the Office for Sustainability and other organizations on and off campus. New Student Orientation Aides helped staff the tables for the water bottle giveaway, DJ'd the event, and supported engagement activities.
In 2023, the Office for Sustainability held an orientation activity that included a succulent planting event for all incoming Law Students. This provided an opportunity for students to learn more about the Office for Sustainability. The only graduate students that were reached were law students.
