Documentation
Do the figures reported above cover one, two, or three academic years?:
A brief description of the methodology used to complete the course inventory :
To cover all courses offered in one year, all courses offered in Fall 2023, Spring 2024, and Summer 2024 were included in this inventory. All standard course descriptions were reviewed for connections to sustainability.
Theere are 40 total academic departments at UR, 29 of which offer sustainability courses, for the sake of STARS we are counting programs and majors as Departments in addition to formal Departments, i.e. such as, Global Studies is an interdisciplinary program that offers sustainability coursses in a variety of different departments. Please see below for a list of programs and departments where we clarify that distinction.
How were courses with multiple offerings or sections counted for the figures reported above?:
A brief description of how courses with multiple offerings or sections were counted:
If the same course is offered in different semesters, we count it seperately. Courses with multiple sections were counted as separate courses (same instructor or not). As an example, the FYS courses are all "FYS 100" but there are dozens of unique sections taught by different faculty/staff. Therefore, they were each counted as separate courses. Cross-listed courses were counted as one course. Since the launch of the Sustainability Minor at UR in 2022, to not confuse students, we are publically promoting only Minor courses as sustainability courses at UR, however, we have worked with the Registrar to develop an internal attribute system for defining courses as either being sustainability focused or inclusive per AASHE's STARS definition and parameters. All of the Sustainability Minor courses at UR are sustainability focused, but not all sustainability focused courses are applicable in the Minor.
