HIGHER EDUCATION EXCELLENCE IN DIVERSITY AWARD (2022 & 2023) (2019 & 2020)
In 2023,2020, and 2019, the University of Pittsburgh has received the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from “INSIGHT Into Diversity” magazine. This national award is given annually to recognize institutions that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion.
In 2023, the University was selected for this award based on our multidisciplinary project Race & Social Determinants of Equity, Health, and Well-being Initiative. This project is committed to addressing racial disparities in equity, health, and well-being at all levels. Its core missions are to attract and retain diverse teaching and research faculty, form interdisciplinary research groups to support faculty, and educate students who are keen on studying race and its effects on equity, health, and well-being.

In 2020, the University was selected based on our impactful programs and initiatives, such as the 2020 Diversity Forum that had over 12,000 participants worldwide and the biweekly town hall series called “This Is Not Normal: Allyship and Advocacy in the Age of COVID-19.” Both programs were / are free and open to the public featuring diverse panels of leaders, educators, and activists who provided insight and analysis into the systemic issues facing communities.

In 2019, the University was selected for this award based on our extensive array of programs and initiatives, such as the Pittsburgh Admissions Collaborative, Cultivating Inclusive Action Planner, Diversity Retreat, and the Latinx cluster-hiring initiative, aimed at increasing diverse representation and inclusive engagement across campus.
MILITARY FRIENDLY SCHOOL
The University of Pittsburgh has also been designated a Military Friendly School® for eleven years in a row. This designation is given to institutions for exemplary services that embrace military students. The University of Pittsburgh's Office of Veterans Services facilitates the transition of veterans from military to University life, supports their ongoing academic success, and assists veterans, guardsmen, reservists, and active duty military in receiving their educational benefits. The office is actively involved with veteran community organizations and offers other services including academic and financial guidance, per-admissions counseling appointments, career develop and resume workshops, orientation sessions designated for veterans and their families, active duty withdrawal assistance, veteran student groups, programs to attend throughout the semester, and networking opportunities.
