A brief description of the institution’s efforts to support alternative fuel and power technology in its motorized fleet:
The entire University Shuttle fleet operates up to 25 vehicles fueled with B3 biodiesel. The fuel is purchased from Guttman Oil, in Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania. 18 vehicles are on the road at one given time. The University of Pittsburgh has a no idling policy for the entirety of campus. This reduces emissions as well as saving fuel. The Parking, Transportation & Services Department (PT&S) has installed Greenroads software into our University shuttle buses. This software allows us to analyze a driver's habits and can also help in monitoring fuel consumption. Average savings are $1,200-$4,000 per vehicle, per year. Approximately 460 - 1,450 gallons of gasoline are saved in total per year, reducing shuttle emissions. Savings vary based on traffic patterns (sitting in traffic, detours), fuel cost, number of charters scheduled, size of buses needed for individual charters, number of miles needed for charters, weather conditions, use of air conditioning, etc. University Fleet Services offers 27 flex-fuel rental vehicles that can take up to E85 fuel.
