The University of Pittsburgh through its Community and Governmental Relations Office (Local Government Relations) advocates for sustainability projects by supporting legislation, ordinances and direct partnerships with the City of Pittsburgh that benefit the city as well as the University. An example of University advocacy is supporting the City of Pittsburgh’s emissions reduction program Climate Action Plan 3.0

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the state/provincial/regional level, including the issues, legislation, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:
The University of Pittsburgh through its Community and Governmental Relations Office (Commonwealth Relations) advocates for campus sustainability primarily through the State Department of General Services and Department of Labor and Industry involving on -campus state construction projects regulated by those departments. The University also follows adopted sustainability practices on non- state related construction projects.

The University of Pittsburgh understands and supports the ongoing national discussion and previous and current legislation to protect the environment through sustainability initiatives. The advocacy for sustainability in general at the University of Pittsburgh is handled through the Office of Community and Governmental Relations (Federal Relations and the sustainability initiatives managed by our Facilities Management Division. For example, the University has embraced the Leadership Energy Environmental Design (LEED) program created by the United States Green Building Council to evaluate building performance. The University adopted this concept as a practice by pursuing LEED certification where appropriate for our building construction projects designed to create high efficient and cost saving green buildings.
