Name of the student educators program (1st program):
Student Eco-Reps Program

A brief description of the student educators program (1st program):
Penn's Student Eco-Reps is an environmental leadership program for undergraduate students interested in advancing sustainability through the implementation of campus-based projects. Students work as paid employees of Penn’s Sustainability Office and collaborate with our University partners to carry out projects in support of Penn’s Climate and Sustainability Action Plan. All Eco-Reps projects involve a strong hands-on component and focus on creating solutions through analyzing the current problem, developing small-scale pilots, and then focusing on broader implementation. Students are asked to bring an entrepreneurial spirit and a sense of willingness and motivation to each project in order to help them succeed.

Some Student Eco-Reps projects are specifically focused on peer-to-peer education and outreach activities. One project executed in 2022-2023 was My Climate Story, a public research project that encourages participants to consider global climate change on a personal scale, initiated and supported by the Penn Program in Environmental Humanities (PPEH). My Climate Story started as a public storytelling and story-sharing campaign designed to document how members of Penn’s community were experiencing climate change.

A brief description of the student educators program’s target audience (1st program):

For each Eco-Rep initiative, outreach and engagement are central components. The target audience for these initiatives typically includes the entire student body, though specific projects may focus on distinct groups.

For example, the My Climate Story initiative (https://my-climate-story.org/) invites all students to share personal stories about how climate change has impacted their lives. Engagement occurs through various channels, including social media campaigns, tabling events, and even course assignments where professors encourage students to contribute their stories.

Another project focuses on spreading awareness about bird conservation through Bird-Friendly Campaigns, particularly the Audubon Society's national Lights Out program. This initiative targets all students living on campus, highlighting the University’s participation during peak bird migration seasons. Philadelphia’s central location along the Atlantic Flyway, a major migration route for over 500 bird species, makes this program especially relevant.

Additionally, efforts to increase waste diversion aim to educate the campus community about waste policies, standards, and practices. These efforts include conducting waste audits, updating signage, and implementing new waste programs such as deskside recycling and centralized trash systems.

Name of the student educators program (2nd program):
Green Living Certification

A brief description of the student educators program (2nd program):
The individual decisions students make on a daily basis, even if seemingly small, play a critical role in the University’s sustainability initiatives. Penn Sustainability seeks to recognize these choices through the Green Living Certification program—an environmental certification available for residents living on and off campus (all students).

Establishing greener lifestyles creates a tangible, positive impact on the campus. By offering Green Living Certification, students will be inspired to take further steps towards improving the health of our environment and to provide a model for others to do the same.

Certification is awarded upon completion of two sections: required and optional actions. The four required actions are habits that are relatively easy to accomplish and provide the foundation for implementing more difficult sustainable practices. The optional actions are organized into five categories: Waste Minimization; Energy & Water; Transportation; Purchasing; Involvement at Penn. All optional actions are assigned points based on a combination of environmental impact, difficulty of implementation, and cost. Based on the number of points achieved, participating students can earn one of three levels for completing the program, bronze, silver, or gold.

A brief description of the student educators program’s target audience (2nd program):

All students on campus interested in adopting more sustainable behaviors.
