Has the institution conducted a GHG emissions inventory within the previous three years that includes all Scope 1 and 2 emissions? :
Yes

A copy of the most recent GHG emissions inventory:
A brief description of the methodology and/or tool used to complete the GHG emissions inventory:

Various methodologies were employed to calculate the emissions related to various scopes.

SCOPE 1 emissions were calculated using the Government of Canada's Greenhouse Gas Quantification Methodology.

SCOPE 2 emissions were calculated using emissions factors for the Province of Ontario provided by the Government

Has the GHG emissions inventory been validated internally by personnel who are independent of the GHG accounting and reporting process and/or verified by an independent, external third party?:
Yes

A brief description of the GHG inventory verification process:

An audit was conducted on our scope 1 and 2 emissions by Internat in 2016 and 2017, as required by the Ontario Provincial government.

In 2019, the University of Ottawa hired an energy analyst, separate from our energy manager, to verify finances related to utilities. The Energy Analyst uses bills from our utility providers to verify consumption rates and emissions.

Documentation to support the GHG inventory verification process:
Gross Scope 1 GHG emissions, performance year:
Weight in MTCO2e
Stationary combustion 20,018 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Other sources (mobile combustion, process emissions, fugitive emissions) 13 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Total gross Scope 1 GHG emissions, performance year:
20,031 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Gross Scope 2 GHG emissions, performance year (market-based):
Weight in MTCO2e
Imported electricity 15,922 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Imported thermal energy 3,000 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Total gross Scope 2 GHG emissions, performance year:
18,922 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Gross GHG emissions from biogenic sources, performance year:
0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Does the GHG emissions inventory include Scope 3 emissions from the following sources?:
Yes or No Weight in MTCO2e
Business travel Yes 2,724.44 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Commuting Yes 16,768 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Purchased goods and services No ---
Capital goods No ---
Fuel- and energy-related activities not included in Scope 1 or Scope 2 No ---
Waste generated in operations Yes 1,386.16 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Other sources Yes 16,060 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Total Scope 3 GHG emissions, performance year:
36,938.60 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

A brief description of how the institution accounted for its Scope 3 emissions:

Scope 3 emissions were calculated using different methods.

Investment emissions were provided by the University of Ottawa's Pension fund manager. Index data is difficult to interpret because carbon
footprint calculations are based on index composition and
weighted by market pricing.

Commuting emissions - Commuting data is collected every three years and emissions are calculated based on the average distance travelled for each modality.

Waste management emissions - Emissions associated with waste and recycling were calculated using waste audit data to determine weights, and emissions factors were applied by category.

Business travel - Calculated using procurement data from across the campus. Costs were converted to passenger mile traveled (Carbonfund.org). Estimates remain incomplete because they do not account for all travel, they do not differentiate travel class, and they do not account for layovers.

Has the institution completed an inventory within the previous three years to quantify its air pollutant emissions?:
No

Annual weight of emissions for::
Weight of Emissions
Nitrogen oxides (NOx) 0.31 Metric tons
Sulfur oxides (SOx) ---
Carbon monoxide (CO) ---
Particulate matter (PM) ---
Ozone (O3) ---
Lead (Pb) ---
Hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) ---
Ozone-depleting compounds (ODCs) ---
Other standard categories of air emissions identified in permits and/or regulations ---

Do the air pollutant emissions figures provided include the following sources?:
Yes or No
Major stationary sources Yes
Area sources No
Mobile sources Yes
Commuting Yes
Off-site electricity production No

A brief description of the methodology(ies) the institution used to complete its air emissions inventory:

We do have an inventory of all our air emission sources but do not take any readings at the sources themselves. The air and noise modelling requirements for our emission approvals are based on input from maximum operating parameters, equipment specifications and worst-case scenarios. The internal operational procedures, maintenance programs on critical equipment ensure they work as specified and therefore modelling parameters are respected and we do not exceed the maximum allowed by the regulations.

- Our Stand-By generators are inventoried and registered under the EASR system of Ontario and meet the MOECC air emission standards.
- All our other stationary sources (boilers, fumehoods, HVAC systems) are inventoried. And they are approved by the MOECC under the ECA approval system for their respective Facilities.
