A brief description of the undergraduate degree program:
Environmental issues fill the headlines — climate change, the oil sands, species loss, to name but a few. Is it possible to grow the economy and protect the environment at the same time? Is our current economic path sustainable? The Honours Bachelor in Environmental Economics and Public Policy provides students with a multidisciplinary understanding of the environment, the economy and the interaction between the two. The program includes a CO-OP option, and students may also undertake a research internship in the public or non-profit sector in fourth year. All students undertake original policy research in a capstone course in either environmental or natural resource economics. The program opens doors to careers in environment-economy policy development and analysis in the public, private and non-profit sectors.

Environmental studies delve into some of the most significant issues of our day, such as anthropogenic climate change, urban pollution and possible threats to human health. You learn how to use applied research tools and management principles that can be applied in a variety of areas, such as conducting environmental impact assessments and resource management.

The environmental studies programs are interdisciplinary; as such they include courses in the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. The programs offer a unique, multi-facetted perspective on the relationship between society and the physical environment. During the last few decades, humanity's impact on the natural world has become a leading topic of international debate and discussion. At stake are matters of primary importance to our society, such as the economic and political consequences of major climate change, problems facing modern agricultural production and possible threats to human health.

Common Law - Option in Environmental Law
A brief description of the undergraduate minor, concentration or certificate (2nd program):
The option in Environmental Law is intended for students wishing to obtain a specialization in the growing field of environmental law and policy. The Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa has one of the largest concentrations of environmental law professors and courses of any law school in Canada, and is home to numerous institutions, such as the Centre for Environmental Law and Global Sustainability, the Ecojustice Legal Clinic, the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law, Sustainable Prosperity. The programme and the institutions create opportunities for mentorship and getting involved in law reform, litigation and policy work relating to environmental law.

Environmental Science is the interdisciplinary study of the environment, its functioning and its relationship to human activities.
Society has a growing need for specialists able to recognize, understand, solve and prevent environmental problems.
The Environmental Science program at the University of Ottawa focuses on the integration of traditional science disciplines (e.g. biology, earth sciences, chemistry, physics) to study the natural environment and the impact of human activities. The program consists of a core of basic science courses complemented by courses in various disciplines that address the scientific and societal aspects of environmental problems. In addition, the program offers three areas of specialization: conservation and biodiversity; global change; and environmental geochemistry and ecotoxicology. The final year entails an independent research project or equivalent units in advanced courses in the specialization.
