Research Inventory
Inventory of the institution’s sustainability research:
We do not currently have a mechanism by which to maintain an accurate inventory of all research related to sustainability. Attached is a report of most, if not all, faculty doing sustainability-related research, with a baseline year of 2022.
A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:
The Environment Initiative maintains a list of faculty and staff involved in sustainability-related or adjacent research, teaching, and work. Staff from the Office of Sustainability and Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation started with that list, filled in information gaps, confirmed those who had left/joined relative to the baseline year, cut faculty/staff not conducting research, and reviewed and cut faculty whose research fell too far outside the scope of sustainability.

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
It's very difficult to calculate define "sustainability research" as this category is very broad, our research is very diverse, and there is no objective way to gather this data. We interpreted "sustainability research" broadly and included any research related to the environment and ecology; natural and earth sciences with implications for contemporary environmental issues; environmental hazards and resiliency (e.g. wildfire, earthquakes, tsunamis); sustainability, pollution and its impacts; environmental justice; sustainable planning and design; and human/natural environment relationships. Additional notes are below regarding how each piece of data was collected:
Total number of the institution’s faculty and/or staff engaged in research: This all came from our payroll system.
Total number of academic departments that include at least one employee who conducts research: In FY19, we reported on all departments, programs, subject areas. For FY22, we reported specifically on the number of academic departments listed in the inventory of Office of the Provost for which there is a formally appointed department head.
Number of academic departments that include at least one employee who conducts sustainability research: This represents the number of academic departments (calculated as noted above) for which there is at least one faculty member conducting environmentally-related research
