Inventory of the institution’s sustainability research:

The Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation and the Office of the Provost's databases of environment-related initiatives and environment-related faculty and officers of administration are in their infancy and not currently published publicly. However, a pdf of these inventories has been attached.

A partial list of ~110 environment affiliated faculty can be found at http://envs.uoregon.edu/people/affiliate/

A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:

The Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation in partnership with the Office of the Provost maintains databases for inventorying environment-related initiatives and environment-related faculty and officers of administration. These inventories are overseen by two project managers and shared with University leadership, including academic departments heads, for updating.

Additionally, the Environmental Studies Program maintains a list of faculty with affiliation with the Department of Environmental Studies, and this was used to gather data as well.

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:

It's very difficult to calculate define "sustainability research" as this category is very broad, our research is very diverse, and there is no objective way to gather this data. We interpreted "sustainability research" broadly and included any research related to the environment, natural and earth sciences, sustainability, and human/natural environment relationships. Additional notes are below regarding how each piece of data was collected:

Number of the institution’s faculty and/or staff engaged in sustainability research: This all came from our payroll system. It includes anyone paid in FY19 where the following are true: their employee class is a faculty-class and some of their payroll came from a sponsored project.

Total number of the institution’s faculty and/or staff engaged in research: This number was gathered based on the OVPRI's and Provost's inventory.

Total number of academic departments that include at least one employee who conducts research: Since the University of Oregon has formal departments in addition to fields of study, programs, subject areas or the equivalent, which may also include faculty conducting research, this number was calculated based using payroll data for any academic unit receiving research funding.

Number of academic departments that include at least one employee who conducts sustainability research: To keep the data consistent with how academic units were calculated, we included fields of study, programs, subject areas or the equivalent to gather this data as well.
