The UO has an Environmental Issues Committee as well as a UO Sustainability Council.

The Environmental Issues Committee advises on policies regarding environmental issues that affect the quality of life, safety and health of the University community, and recommends educational programs, training sessions, or workshops that could be offered to members of the University community and/or the general public.

The UO Sustainability Council's mission is listed below:

To guide and promote UO sustainability initiatives to achieve national prominence in research, education, service, and campus operations. To this end, the Council will work with faculty, administration and external partners to:

1. Advise the President, Provost, Vice-Presidents and College Deans regarding future programs and opportunities, strategic investments and policies.

2. Build the capacity of faculty and staff to conduct and lead sustainability projects. Members of the Council may implement this through the Meyer Fund Faculty Leadership Group.

3. Enhance cross-campus communication and coordination of sustainability activities in education, research and campus operations. This includes sharing information about pertinent OUS, regional and national efforts with potential impacts or opportunity for UO programs.

4. Ensure proper UO representation at system-wide, regional and national meetings related to sustainability. This involves building capacity of faculty, staff and students to conduct this work as well as identifying key meetings and appropriate representatives.

5. Assist faculty and administrators in developing plans, messages and implementation strategies for sustainability initiatives, including the Big Ideas. This may include developing new approaches to providing program support for projects and programs that span beyond the bounds of our colleges, centers, institutes, and administrative units.

A brief description of each sustainability officer position:

The sustainability director is responsible for actively promoting and facilitating sustainability activities across campus, collaborating with students, staff, faculty and relevant committees and communicating regularly with members of the campus community. Working with campus stakeholders, the director coordinates and advocates for UO's integration of sustainable principles and practices into campus operations, procedures, and student and faculty activities. The sustainability director reports to the Assistant Vice President for Administration in the Office of the Vice President for Finance and Administration.
