The doctoral program in Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences gives students opportunities to conduct innovative research in these areas while ensuring success for careers in industry, government, and academia. Research areas include environmental engineering, environmental fluid dynamics, earth sciences, and structural engineering. The program welcomes applicants with backgrounds in engineering and physical sciences.

The doctoral program in Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences: Materials Science and Engineering is part of Notre Dame’s distinct Materials Science and Engineering program which represents seven departments and programs across the Colleges of Engineering and Science. The doctoral program in Biological Sciences encompases the broad scope of biological inquiry, while integrating several specific areas of study in biomedical sciences, global health, and ecology, evolution, and the environment. The Ecology and Environmental Biology area of research examines the responses of organisms to the environment, interactions among species in ecological communities, and the way that nutrients and energy flow through ecosystems. Students in this area work in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and many researchers apply their work in management and policy.

The College of Science also offers programs that lead to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Graduate students can pursue any of the areas of scientific interest represented among the faculty. One option offered is pursuing environmental and global health research through the world.

The Master of Global Affairs is a two-year professional degree to prepare students for leadership and careers in government, nongovernmental and civil society organizations and the private sector. The Sustainable Development Concentration provides rigorous training in quantitative and qualitative methods of analysis, exploration of systems thinking and human-centered design, hands-on project based work, and the skills to design, manage, and evaluate development programs and policies. It sets students up for leadership roles in the global effort to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The GLOBES Certificate in Environment and Society is offered through the John J. Reilly Center. It is an interdisciplinary training program designed to complement and enhance a graduate or professional student’s research and education through the exploration of key environmental challenges from different perspectives.
The mission of GLOBES is to challenge students to think at the interface of the environment and society by exploring pressing environmental issues and the societal implications of those issues. GLOBES integrates ecology, environmental science, engineering, law, policy, and the humanities to inspire interdisciplinary scholarship and engage multiple perspectives. The program is open to Ph.D., Law, and terminal masters students in all disciplines who have an interest in environmental, global health, and sustainability research.
