The charter or mission statement of the committee or a brief description of the committee's purview and activities :

The Energy and Environmental Issues Committee provides broad-based academic and operational guidance and support around the University of Notre Dame’s sustainability initiatives. The committee is comprised of administrators, faculty, staff and students representing a diverse group of campus stakeholders.

Within the last two years the committee has participated in the following:
•Proposed the implementation of new minors in Energy Studies and Sustainability as well as a Sustainability section for a required freshman seminar.
•Recommended that the administration institute a campus-wide temperature set point policy that requires all thermostats to be maintained within a 5º range.
•Reviewed and approved a communications and marketing plan for the Office of Sustainability.
•Reviewed annual updates of the campus greenhouse gas emissions inventory.
•Reviewed and offered feedback for the University Sustainability Strategy.
•Reviewed and provided feedback on the Utilities Long Range Plan for the University.
•Reported on progress in implementing $10 million in energy conservation measures and the installation of 120 LED lamp posts on campus.
•Helped to refine a plan for a Green Labs energy conservation program, which is currently being implemented.
•Participated in developing a campus garden with 45 plots, currently in its second season.
•Reviewed the credits achieved by the first campus building to pursue LEED certification, which achieved LEED Gold.
•Proposed the topics the “Footprint of Food” and “Purchasing Power” for the annual Green Summit the past two years, a very successful student outreach event.
•Approved an LEV preferred parking program, which has 184 participants to date, as well as a partnership with ZipCar, implemented in August 2010.
•Addressed a reusable packaging program for office supply delivery implemented in June 2010 which is expected to save 9.6 tons of cardboard and plastic annually.
•Continues to debate the merits of various means of reducing the consumption of single-use water bottles on campus.

The Office of Sustainability, integrates sustainability principles across all operational areas of the university and collaborates with relevant sustainability education and research programs to drive outcomes that are aligned with Notre Dame’s mission. The office is charged with enacting significant behavior change in individuals and departments through the implementation of tested sustainability practices.
