A brief description of the institution’s programs that help increase the diversity of higher education faculty :
Activity - Multicultural Initiatives in Teaching
The Multicultural Initiatives in Teaching (MIT) Program was formerly known as the Minorities in Teaching Program. The MIT Program was initiated in 1988 as a school/university partnership between the University of Northern Iowa and five Iowa school districts with large, ethnically diverse student populations. These districts included Davenport, Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, Sioux City, and Des Moines.
The major goal of the program was to increase the number of ethnically diverse educators teaching in Iowa schools.
Activity - Minorities in the Leadership of Education (MILE) Program
The program seeks to recruit, enroll, financially assist, and graduate aspiring school leaders of color. Begun in 2008, MILE is currently supporting 11 students of color in the principalship, superintendency, and doctoral programs.
Activity - Disability Services for Faculty and Staff
Faculty and Staff Disability Services is committed to ensuring faculty, staff, prospective employees, and visitors with disability have the best possible experience while at the University of Northern Iowa. The University values Diversity, and recognizes disability as a part of its commitment to Diversity. Our goal is to create an inclusive working environment for all UNI employees.
Faculty and Staff Disability Services was created to assist, accommodate, and advocate for individuals with disability, to best ensure equal access across campus. The office serves as a point of contact for faculty and staff, prospective employees, and visitors regarding accessibility and accommodations. The University is committed to being in compliance with, in addition to being in the spirit of the Americans with Disability Act of 1990, and the Americans with Disability Amendments Act of 2008.
Activity - Iowa's I.D.E.A. Diversity Summit
The I.D.E.A. Diversity Summit is an annual event that seeks to improve recruitment, retention, and overall diversity efforts at colleges and universities around the state of Iowa. The event includes keynote speakers, breakout sessions, and discussions on various topics relating to diversity. The summit is organized by a consortium of colleges and universities, including the three Regents’ Universities. Each year, UNI provides financial support in the form of a sponsorship, which helps fund the summit. In addition, UNI also hosted the 4th annual summit in 2009, hosting approximately 250 attendees.
