The Iowa Board of Regents has defined sustainability across the campus for UNI as: "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs".

A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the inventory:
A survey was developed by the Sustainability Office and distributed by the Provost's Office to each of the academic departments on campus. With a full set of respondents, survey was geared toward answering ER-16, ER-17, and ER-19.
