The University of Northern Iowa includes Sustainability as one of eight core University Values. It states related to this value "Sustainability – an attractive, well-maintained campus environment that enhances the living and learning experience with an emphasis on environmental stewardship". Additionally, sustainability is a component of a number of goals included within the 2010-2015 strategic plan.

The following goals and objectives related to social components of sustainability are included in the strategic plan.
Goal 5. Create and maintain an inclusive educational environment that prepares students to thrive in a diverse global environment
G5.Objective 1 – Educate all students to ensure that they are prepared to live and work successfully in a diverse world
G5.O1.S1 – Increase the number of students who participate in diverse cultural experiences
