The Iowa Board of Regents has defined sustainability at UNI as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. When applied to course content at UNI, this includes coursed the cover topics crossing and integrating three basic areas: environment, social/health, and economics.

A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the inventory:
UNI has gone through two iterations of this process in the last three years. The first process included a simple call for courses to be added to the list. The more recent list included a scouring of the 2008-2010 course catalog. During this process courses were identified that may touch on topics related to sustainability, each of these courses was noted as a potential sustainability related or focused course. This list was then distributed by the Provost's office to each college for the various Department Heads to change the rating of the courses listed, have courses removed, or ask for additional courses to be added. After the final list was compiled with input from each department on campus, the list was approved by the Provost's office and the University Sustainability Council.
