The 2010 University Plan identifies "leadership in renewable energy" as the top goal for UNBC. The Plan also states the aim of providing education and research that is among the best in the areas of Environment & Natural Resources. As an educational institution located in the north, surrounded by natural beauty and resource based industries, UNBC intends to exercise stewardship for the planet through our teaching,scholarship and service.

The 2010 University Plan places a high degree of importance on being a "place of service" and being relevant and responsive to the communities we serve. UNBC plans to integrate teaching and service to benefit our students,work with communities in British Columbia and around the world, urban and rural, northern and indigenous, in their social
and economic needs.
The 2010 University Plan also states the aim of providing education and research that is among the best in the areas First Nations and Indigenous Issues, Health and Quality of Life and Northern Community Sustainability and Development.
