UNT has developed a comprehensive Strategic Plan for Research that outlines specific goals for UNT to achieve National Research University Status. Within this report, sustainability research is emphasized as a top-priority. The university seeks to attract students interested in sustainability research and supports students pursuing sustainability research. This is evident in the numerous trans-disciplinary research clusters that focus on a variety of sustainability topics. Additionally, sustainability has been identified as one of the four key themes of the university. As such, sustainability is promoted in all aspects of campus activities, including student research.
