The UNG Ecological Protection Lab continues to lead in collaborative regional efforts to protect the Eastern Hemlock from the invasive Wooly Adelgid by initiating biological control efforts through the rearing and release of predatory beetles to reduce adelgid numbers and impacts.

UNG is also a test site for a new American Chestnut grove.

Hall County Vision 2030 is a project of the Greater Hall County Chamber of Commerce that brings together a coordinated group of volunteers to oversee long-term initiatives identified by citizens in the community to ensure Hall County / Gainesville continues to be a great place to live, work, and play. The focus areas are public art, health and wellbeing, millennials, diversity, transportation, green space, tourism and recreation, downtown development, Lake Lanier Olympic park, Harbour Town, education, the Wisdom Keepers project, community of towns, and collaboration. UNG is a financial investor and is currently engaged or will be in committees and projects within each focus area.

In this regional collaboration, 16 Appalachian Studies Centers in 11 states work together in service to preserve and apply history and traditions to contemporary projects that build a sustainable future in Appalachian communities. Examples of recent projects include the use of heirloom seeds and Appalachian gardening techniques to create sustainable urban gardens and preservation of the Mount Hope Cemetery, capturing and linking the history of this Civil War cemetery and its residents to create tourism product for Lumpkin County ad surrounding communities.
