A brief description of the institution’s featured program, initiative, or accomplishment:
UNCW's Office of Sustainability prioritizes its work through collaborative synergies across campus. The Sustainability Advisory Board helps facilitate projects and initiatives that support the mission and goals of the Office of Sustainability. These programs further the sustainability mission in all aspects of the university's institutional culture, including operations, activities, academic programs, and community relationships. These voting members represent all areas of campus and guide the Office of Sustainability in funding decisions, policy creation, and student initiatives.

Second Point of Distinction
Waste Diversion & Recycling
A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:
Started in 1989, UNCW Recycling Services offers source-separated recycling to the main campus, the Center of Marine Science, DC Virgo Preparatory Academy, and the surrounding community through our Public Recycling Depot. We collect, process, bale, and sell commodities at our on-site MRF. Diverting 450 tons of materials a year, on average, diligently searches for new vendors to expand the number of items accepted through the program. We meet quarterly with other waste stakeholders in the county quarterly - private, public, and nonprofit - to coordinate efforts in preserving the life of our landfill.

Third Point of Distinction
Peer Educator Program
A brief description of the third program/initiative/accomplishment:
Sustainability Peer Educators serve as the link between the Office of Sustainability and the campus community by conducting educational programs, volunteer events, and collaborative experiences. This interdisciplinary program is designed for students, regardless of major, who are passionate about advancing sustainability on campus. Initiatives range from energy conservation, waste management, promotion of alternative transportation, support for local food systems, and more. The primary mission of the Sustainability Peer Educators is to create a culture of sustainability on campus through education and engagement.
